Pittsburgh International Airport

Pittsburgh International is the second busiest passenger airport in Pennsylvania. The airport is at the intersection of I-376 (still in construction) and I-576. It is in the Pittsburgh suburb of Findlay Township, approximately 20 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh. The airport code is IATA: PIT, ICAO: KPIT. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is the main metropolitan area served by the airport. Recently in May 2005 Southwest Airlines started using Pittsburgh airport as hub. Pittsburgh is also a hub for Air Midwest, Colgan Air and Republic Airlines, and US Airways. There were 9,987,310 passengers who used this airpot on 2006. The total aircraft operations on 2006 was 235,264. Pittsburgh International Airport has 75 gates on 4 concourses. There are 4 runways and 1 helipad at the airport. 2 of the runways are concrete and 2 other are Asphalt and concrete mixed. The helipad surface is concrete. The runways legth in ascending order is as follows: 8,101ft, 9,708ft, 10,502ft, 11,500ft.The Helipad diameter is on standard of 60 ft. On the beginning of World war 2 at 1940 Works Progress Administration (WPA) bought the Bell Farm and began construction of the runways. Allegheny County officials expanded the military airport with the addition of a commercial passenger terminal on July 18, 1946. The Greater Pittsburgh Airport opened on May 31, 1952. The airport was designed by a local architect named Joseph W. Hoover. There is no special event on naming the airport, except it got the name of the town where it operates. To get to the aiport drivers should take exit #5 off Rt. 279 or exit #6 off Interstate 79 from downtown Pittsburgh. Accessing the airport is easy. There are car rental, shuttle, bus, limousine and taxi ground transportations options. Short term daily and hourly airport parking rates are $1.00 for the first hour, $3.00 for later hours up to a daily maximum of $17.00. The long term rates are $1.50 per hour up to a daily maximum of $9.50. The economy or extended parking rates are $5.75 per day. A valet curbside airport parking service is leaving your car to service attendant while you and your bags move directly into the Midfield Terminal.
Off airport parking services offer rapidly move to your terminal choice via their free shuttle bus service. All on airport parking as well as off airport parking reserves handicap spaces and all transport shuttle buses are handicap-enabled. There are 47 restaurants, bar and cafes in the airport. The airport’s Lost Item Hotline at 412-472-5525 from 7 am to 8 pm, Sunday through Saturday. The Chapel and the office are in Airside – Mezzanine.
